Ah, but once the idealistic ornamentation and the finery of deception is lost do not the true colours become visible? Once the rose coloured glasses are cracked and discarded can you not see in deep blues, vibrant greens and joyful yellows?
The desolation after the breaking of an illusion does not last. Truth though often bitter is healthier than putrid lies coated in frosting.
More the often than not I would verily agree, but the night that I awoke and wrote this I realized that in some cases, it was a far more wretched thing to be true than to just go along with the mentality of the status quo. It’s vile to point out something and have those who you expect to hold their little peons responsible to find excuses where there are none.
Very interesting and profound piece. So much of our day to day interactions with one another are all “ornamental.” It is a rare circumstance indeed to be shown the inner most workings of mankind.
me thinks its not that its rare, we all strive to be who we feel we are, but in today’s world of pomp and circumstance, there is that desire to rise above and be seen. The problem often lies in that the platform we stand on is flash and fireworks, so people watch with ooh and aahs, but leave when there are nothing but embers, a wonder to watch but it takes patience to read what the crackles signify.
Thank you – amid the ocean of humanity, sometimes i think we all wish to climb upon a piece of driftwood to stand out, if just for the littlest of time before the waves wash us back off into just peeking above the crests.
Some very good phrases in this, and a nice thumping melancholic progression. Personally, I find writing one of the best ways to deal with intense feelings, and work through them, and the most human part of this poem is the most powerful, the desire to just have something, however lightweight, instead of nothing.
Many times looking through rose colored lenses does enable human beings to survive and to make progress.
If the image and words you have provided are taken in as one, is this about being accepted for who we are without all of the trappings? At least that is how I understtod it. Liked your reference to embers – as they are what is most desirable. The title and reflection point in the image do seem to connect on another level…hmmm. Ultimately though it is how people treat one another that is key – makes for good or bad days, and by extension a good or bad world.
Wearing rose lenses in less than ideal situations helps. It is really how people treat one another that makes the quality of life good or bad …all trappings aside. Liked your reference to embers as they are really what the true purpose of making a fire is all about and are the most valuable. The connotation between the title’s white letters and the reflection area in the image was clever …hmmm.
Some fine lines in there, though if I had to pick I’d have to say the one that gripped me most was: “barren of idealistic ornamentation”…such a statement there. Gripping. Layered depth that sent me skittering back for a second read-through, and the whole piece flows very nicely. Fine work.
Thank you, I always hope that the image I think fits when I put them together, I’m not very confident with this since sometimes its like being too close to the matter to see it objectively.
nah, I’m shallow as all hell, but my brain likes to think it is. Indeed I am a Canadian, though you may shudder at the thought that I’m Albertan! Glad you liked the scrawl!

Glad you liked my little scrawl. Writing is sort of a treatment of sorts; it allows what you don’t want to say, or admit, to come across.

Quite different to the other poems of yours I’ve read too.
